I want to be upfront: this isn’t a traditional review. I didn’t stay overnight at EDITION Kanai. During our recent stay at the neighboring St. Regis Kanai, however, the EDITION team graciously gave me a full property tour, we had dinner at Kitchen (which was outstanding), and I spent time speaking with guests who had stayed there. Combined with my experience at many EDITION hotels, I think I have a good sense of who this property is—and who it isn’t.

If you’re considering EDITION Kanai, I’d recommend booking through a Marriott STARS advisor like me 😊. STARS bookings typically include complimentary breakfast for two, a room upgrade (when available), early check-in, late checkout, and a minimum $100 hotel credit—sometimes even more. One of my clients received several hundred dollars in resort credits plus a complimentary spa treatment.

For Marriott Bonvoy elite members, STARS is especially valuable because EDITION properties don’t offer free breakfast as an elite benefit. You’ll still earn your Marriott points and elite night credits while enjoying the additional STARS perks.

First Impressions

Like most EDITION hotels, the design is understated rather than flashy. The architecture is beautiful, with a modern, minimalist aesthetic that blends naturally into the surrounding mangroves and coastline. It feels sophisticated without trying too hard.

The atmosphere immediately stood out. While there was music around the pool, it was more of a relaxed lounge vibe than a party scene. It felt decidedly adult-oriented—social enough to have energy, but never loud or chaotic.

Service

One theme kept coming up from guests I spoke with: the service.

They described the concierge team as exceptionally attentive and responsive, even checking in through WhatsApp to ensure turndown service met expectations. Guests also mentioned numerous complimentary touches throughout their stay, including sunscreen and after-sun lotion at the pool, chilled towels and refreshments in the fitness center, and thoughtful welcome amenities at SO’OL Beach Club.

The rooms feature Le Labo bath amenities, another signature luxury touch that guests consistently praised.

While I can’t personally evaluate the overnight service, the feedback was remarkably consistent and aligns with what I’ve experienced at other EDITION properties.

Dining

This is one area I can personally recommend.

We had dinner at Kitchen, and it was excellent. Like many EDITION hotels around the world, food appears to be one of the property’s strengths. If dining is an important part of your vacation, this hotel is likely to deliver.

Rooms

From touring the accommodations, I’d say the rooms are very much in line with the EDITION philosophy: clean, elegant, and intentionally minimalist.

Depending on your taste, that may be either a strength or a weakness.

If you love bold luxury with dramatic finishes and ornate details, the rooms may feel a little understated compared to some other five-star resorts. For some travelers, that may be the only real downside.

Final Thoughts

Everything I saw—and everything I heard from guests—points to EDITION Kanai delivering exactly what the brand promises: refined, modern luxury with outstanding food, highly attentive service, and a calm, adults-focused atmosphere.

If St. Regis Kanai is about timeless luxury and exceptional service in a serene beachfront setting, EDITION Kanai feels like its cooler, more design-forward sibling. Both are excellent; the better choice simply depends on the kind of vacation you’re looking for.

For travelers who value quality over quantity and prefer understated luxury to oversized resorts, EDITION Kanai looks like one of the strongest luxury options in the Riviera Maya.
