Tonight is opening night, and I am shocked to say that I am
more excited than nervous. Musical theater was important to me during my teen days,
but I ultimately dropped it because I was too busy. Earlier this year, my therapist
sent me a TED talk with Ethan Hawke on creativity. As always with TED Talks, I initially rolled my eyes, but his argument over the importance of Creativity and how humans tend to downplay it or deprioritize it resonated with me.

My costume!
I used to be creative. I used to sing, dance and perform. Then
I became too ‘cool, busy and important’ and dropped it. For the last
year I have worked on my mental and physical health and wanted to do something
creative. Then Matt saw and sent me a Facebook ad for a local production of the
Rocky Horror Picture Show with the Queer Theater Company and pushed me to audition.
I immediately was drawn to Rocky because for most of my adult life there was no
way I had the body or confidence to play that role. Now pushing 40…it is
happening! It is so much fun and my creative juices are kicking again. I would
like to take a moment to thank a few people for making this possible.
Matt (Husband)
Matt pushed and pushed and ultimately forced me to audition
despite my misgivings. Rehearsals have been frequent and after work and he
never complains about taking care of the dogs, doing evening chores and not
having dinner with me. Thank you, my love.
Brian (Brother)
My straight brother forced me to see Rocky Horror
Live with him a million years ago and I fell in love with the show. My desire to
audition and perform in it stems from him taking me all those years ago.
Marc (Director)
Marc has done an unbelievable job pushing us to be our best
performers, while maintaining a safe and comfortable environment in a very uncomfortable
show. He makes rehearsals fun and rewarding. I chickened out and did not
audition last minute despite emailing Marc prior. Marc reached out to me after
and encouraged me to send an audition video which I did and the rest is
history.
The Cast
It has been such a
joy and delight to work with such a wonderful group of actors. I cannot wait to
kill it with y’all the next month. The amount of work y’all put in with some
issues in the background we had to work around is inspiring.
